Old Fashioned Cheese Burgers

This is done the way our grandparents used to do it before grilling.  It is excellent comfort food and very filling!!  Love this recipe!!

 homemade patty melts.

Ingredients:
1 lb. ground beef (85%)
1 large egg
1 medium sweet onion
¼ tsp garlic powder
1 ½ tsp McCormack’s Mediterranean Spiced Sea Salt
1 tsp fresh ground pepper
2 T unsalted butter (soft)
12 slices white sandwich bread
12 slices longhorn cheddar cheese

Directions:
In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, egg, garlic powder, sea salt, and pepper.  Grate ½ of the onion into the mixture.  Mix well and make thin hamburger patties.  As you do with grilled cheese, spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.  Heat an iron skillet (or an electric griddle) to medium high.  Cook the burgers at least 3 minutes on each side.  (As you are cooking the burgers, you can add some sliced onions remaining and cook with it.)  Drain patties on paper towels and get rid of any leftover grease on the griddle or in the skillet. Place six slices of bread butter down in the skillet.  On top of each, place a slice of cheese. Now is the time to add those grilled onions, burgers, and another slice of cheese.  Place the remaining six slices of bread on top…butter side facing you.  Cook each sandwich until golden brown (at least two minutes)…like you do grilled cheese.
